On Sunday August 24th, 2008 at 7:00 a.m., over one hundred police officers and friends from across Canada & the US, all members of
the Cops for Cancer team, embarked on the first leg of the Ironman Canada Triathlon competition
in Penticton, British Columbia. After a leisurely 3.8 km swim
and a scenic 180 km bike ride they
finish by running a complete marathon! On top of
participating in this physically and mentally grueling event, they succeeded in raising over $1,100,000 for the
battle against
cancer!
On August 29, 2010 the team will
once again compete in the Ironman Canada Triathlon in Penticton.

Cops for Cancer,
a Part of Ironman
Canada History
Ironman Canada 2007 had a very important birthday and our team was
proud to be included as a significant contributor to Ironman Canada
History. Kerry Nisbet’s article on the Cops for Cancer team was used
in “Subaru Ironman Canada, Celebrating 25
years”, a book recounting the history
of the longest running Ironman race in North America. We were also
included in the 25th Anniversary video and presentations
made at Gyro Park, during the Kinship concert. C4C was mentioned
amongst Ironman Canada greats, such as the Hoyt family, Mike
Waystaff, Sister Madonna, Paula Newby Fraser, Heather Fuhr and Lisa
Bentley. James McDonald and Dale Nisbet did a terrific job
representing our team on the Gyro Park stage. The video footage
about our team had many eyes watering and the crowd went wild when
Dale and James mentioned that our team has raised over $2.5 million
dollars to fight Cancer. Go Team!
Cops for Cancer Makes Great Showing at
the 2007 Ironman Canada
Our
presence at Ironman Canada has steadily increased and our
involvement has taken many new directions since our teams’ humble
beginning nine years ago. We had a memorable and strong showing on
the race course again this summer. A number of our teammates
competed and many Personal Bests were achieved.
Additionally, our team continues to give back to Ironman Canada by
volunteering at the event. This year, 97 members from our
team, including members from our Winnipeg and Vancouver chapters,
donated a total of over 440 hours. We helped out with Security at
the Swim Start, Sag on the run and bike course, the Family Finisher
Pen and the Eastside Road Clean – up. The volunteer jobs however,
were not without their perks. Volunteers got access to where the
action was. Nothing beats the thrill of watching the athletes
staying focused and determined despite cramped muscles, loose bowels
and bleeding nipples. It gives one goose bumps just thinking about
it. Inspirational!!!

"Cops for Cancer" began in June of 1994. A young
Edmonton boy was diagnosed with cancer and the
subsequent chemotherapy treatments left this young
child bald, and the brunt of ridicule and teasing
from other children in the neighborhood.
Sgt
Gary Goulet of the Edmonton Police Service heard of
the plight of this young boy and decided to do
something about it. He gathered a group of Edmonton
Police Service (EPS) members together who all shaved
their heads and then went and picked up the young
boy (Lyle Jorgensen) and showed him that being bald
was cool. To read more click

Cops for Cancer would
like to thank all of the Edmonton and surrounding
schools who participated in our "School Challenge" for
the 2006-2007 school year. We had great success with 16
schools raising over $230,000 for the Canadian Cancer
Society! These schools fundraised by way of headshaves,
fun run and walks, bike-a-thons and many other exciting
activities. Special thanks go out to Bellerose Composite
High School, McNally High School, St. Francis Xavier
High School, St.Mark School (click on photo above to
enlarge), and Dan
Knott School for each raising over $15,000. Keep up the
good work!
See you in the 2007-2008 school
year.
Cops for Cancer would
also like to thank Funky Pickle for their help in
providing pizza to those schools who won the challenge
for this year! Please visit their website at
